Inner Flow had a pleasant opportunity to have Jeff Gotheff speak at one of our many Flow Talks that we have for our members. Jeff Gotheff and Josh Sieden published a book, “Who Does What by How Much?”. Jeff highlights the that Objective and Key Results (OKR) is a framework that can be applicable at all organizational levels. Not only can it apply to teams at work, but also in an indivuals personal life.
Reading Time: 3 minutes
During the Flow Talk, he asked the crowd about what habit they started, did it succeed, and their takeaways. After, it wasn’t about doing it consistently and turning it into a chore. It was about the individual having the ability and flexibility to do it when they could. It’s about finding the habits that work for you and that you have the flexibility and tactics to achieve said goal.
What is OKR
Originally OKR was for teams as it’s defined as “A Goal-setting framework for teams that defines a quantitative future state and measures success towards that goal by measuring changes in human behavior instead of completing tasks or work products.” The Focus was to shift the mindset into focusing on human behaviors since that will be more beneficial for a team and company rather than the product or service itself. The 3 main focus points for companies are: quantitative, inspirational and aspirational, and provide clear values. The main goal is not only to make things happen, but to focus on the change of human behavior. When teams change their mindset to focus on human behavior, it creates more ideas. It gives more opportunities and chances for people to collaborate with one another and find more solutions.
“Sometimes our ideas will work and sometimes they won’t. And that’s ok.”
It’s important to know that there will always be setbacks, but that just gives the person a chance to evaluate what is happening and change their shift; this shows growth and to learn from it.
How it can Apply to Individuals
Jeff shifts the talk from business to personal lifestyle. He shows us how we can take the same ideology and apply that to individuals. He asked, Why do we do this and how will we keep it? The 3 keys that are important to keep in mind to start on the right path are:
- knowledge base
- skills and capacity
- what motivates you into continuing this for either short to long term
With the same approach as a business, we can take the 3 keys and apply that to individual short term and long terms. The most important thing to remember while achieving better habits alongside the 3 keys is to ask yourself 3 things. Is it inspirational, aspirational, and can it be a measure of success?
At the end of the Inner Flow Talk, Jeff invited the audience to take part in a challenge. Since we now know more about what OKRs are, it’s the perfect time to set new goals and explore the effectiveness of having different tactics to find the perfect path to achieving new goals for your well-being. After 20 minutes, you will have found effective methods that caters to your personality and individual experience.
